I’ve had my hair cut by some real masters in NYC, including stylists at Bumble and Bumble and Oribe. Admittedly, I’ve been a two-cut-per-year kind of girl, but as old age creeps in, and along with it, the wiry, wily, evil grays (hmm–good name for a band), the mop needs a bit more maintenance. Not only do I shun blowing, ironing, spraying or moussing, but my idea of a hair style is whatever I wake up with, so a great cut is critical. (I always laugh when people ask me if I do hair – I point to my head and say “does it look like I do hair??”)
That said, I’m happy to report that my current and only stylist is Carlos Rogers, who, along with his wife Adrienne, owns Hush Salon on 3rd Street in Old City, was named the “Best of the Best” for a Philly haircut in this month’s issue of Allure. These sorts of honorable mentions are often so political, and go to the same old names, that is, service providers who either spend a lot on advertising or on their PR person, so it’s refreshing to see the distinction go to someone who’s earned it through sheer talent.
Unfortunately, for the many brides who are looking for someone brilliant to do their hair on their wedding day, Hush doesn’t do “do’s.” I joked with Carlos that last time I saw him about getting on the show “Split Ends” (on the Style network), asking him what it would be like if he ended up in a salon in Texas where updoes aren’t just for special events and pageants, but a way of life. He said, matter-of-factly, “I’d be in trouble.” The reality is that the skills are there, but it’s not the direction of the salon to provide bridal services….and that’s okay. As an ex-New Yorker, I appreciate the simplicity of their “beauty without the noise” philosophy.
No need to take my word about what a find Hush Salon is – there are 22 and counting five-star reviews on Citysearch that wax poetic about the talents of Carlos, colorist Adrienne, and stylists Ruth and Pam. Appointments can be made by calling (215) 923-5010.
